1)
How do you sympathise with the Joker?
For one to commit such acts of brutality and violence, he either has to be a victim of such acts in the past or he must have been influenced from somewhere else. Thus, assuming that the Joker was a victim of child abuse, i sympathise with the Joker's bad experiences in the past. He must have had abusive parents or parents that did not care.
The first one would have affected him directly.
The second one would have indirectly affected him. If the joker's parents could not be bothered with his welfare, he could have started hanging out with the wrong group of people and got influenced to a life of violence and crime.
He might have started out as a teenager "acting out" and longing for attention and it might have gradually went on to addiction to gore and the longing to "get-rich-quick".
He also has a lingering feeling of unfufillment in his life as he is always being thwarted by Batman. Such feelings may make him strike back with more ferocity, only to fail again. He might feel useless and helpless. Which are a bad combination of feelings that can drive a person mad, which is evident in Joker from the scene in the movie we watched in class.
Thus, i conclude that Joker deserves my sympathy.
2) What have you learnt from this lesson?
By watching this movie, I have learnt to see heros in a different perspective, instead of judging them with the stereotype hero. We see many examples of this in both real life and in other shows.
As we look around us, we realise that many people around us are actually heros. A hero is not one who wears a flashy bright costume, flying around to save people wearing his underwear on top of his clothes. In the real life, the most unexpected people are the real heros. For example; Our mother, our teachers, the school councillor, the janitor for all you know! They all do works that affect our lives for the better. A mother is the one who kept us alive since little and the teacher teaches us so that we will have a better future. A janitor does jobs that we shun as too beneath us, when they are the ones that work hard to make sure that the place is hygienic and is a good place to live and learn. To conclude the first point, this lesson has widened my view.
Secondly, I have learnt to analyse the character in depth and i have also realised that it actually has made me learn that not all superheroes are perfect and that not all super villans are completely rotten to the core. That every person on earth has valuable qualities and that character analysis helps us appreciate every character fully and understand the reasons behind their actions. It also teaches us how to judge who is good and who is bad in real life, which gives us a advantage when choosing friends.
To sum it up, this lesson has helped us to learn many things that can help us in real life and the lesson was enriching and enlightening.
